The Basics: Over/Under Betting

After moneyline vs spread, over/under betting is the third most popular category to bet on in the world, but especially in American sports. An over/under bet is simply placing a wager on the total number of points scored by both teams combined. You can either choose to bet that there will be more points scored than a particular amount, or you can bet that there will be less points scored than that amount.

Say the Cowboys and Redskins are playing a regular season football game. The O/U line is set at 52.5. If you believe the total score will add up to 53 or more, then bet the over. If not, look to bet the under. The final score could be 53-0 or 27-26 (or anything in between and more), as long as the final sum is greater than 52.5.

When to Bet the Over/Under

This is often a popular bet when a winner is difficult to determine (or minimal/no value is determined). Often if there are two great offenses, or two great defenses, there can be value in the O/U respectively. It is also fun to cheer for points if you decide to go with the over.

With soccer bets especially but also in other sports, the O/U can be a great way to bet when paired with an outcome. A substantial percentage of the soccer bets I place are picking both a winner and the O/U. An example of this would be placing the single bet option of Leicester City & O1.5 goals. This would mean I am betting Leicester City to both win and for the total amount of goals scored to be greater than 1.5. In this case, any Leicester win besides 1-0 would produce a hit. The reason it adds potential value is because the odds makers view it as a parlay. So, the O1.5 total goals and Leicester odds are multiplied together.

Also, other than soccer, overtime counts towards totals, so keep this in mind. Learn more about how to bet smarter on soccer here.

Be Careful: The Under Can Limit Fun

I will say no matter the sport you are betting on, be wary that if you bet the under, it may limit your viewing experience. Don’t get me wrong, it may be the smart play, but also understand that you are going to be rooting for 3-and-outs, missed shots, and ground balls. Because most people bet recreationally to enhance the entertainment of sports, it is worth throwing in this small disclaimer so that you understand what you are getting into. We talk more about this in our NFL Betting Explained article. As always, bet better, bet smarter with SmartSportsBet

Best of luck with your smart betting!
